Kintsugi

I Am Kintsugi

There’s a Japanese art form called Kintsugi, where broken pottery is repaired using lacquer mixed with powdered gold. Instead of hiding the cracks, the artist highlights them. The break isn’t something to be ashamed of—it becomes part of the object’s story, making it more valuable than before.

My therapist recently told me, “You’re like Kintsugi pottery.”

I took the illustration she gave me and sat with it. The more I thought about it, the more I understood. I have been shattered—by grief, by loss, by things I never asked for but had to carry anyway. When someone I love died, I cracked in ways I didn’t know were possible. My routines broke. My beliefs broke. My sense of time, of fairness, of safety—splintered. I thought I would never be whole again.

But I’m starting to learn something: healing doesn’t mean going back to who I was. It means honoring who I am now—because of what I’ve lived through.

Even though the cracks are visible, a lot like scars on our skin, the gold inlaid is a sign of healing.

The gold that fills my cracks isn’t glittery or obvious.

Sometimes it’s quiet strength—the ability to get out of bed on days I don’t want to.

Sometimes it’s vulnerability—the way I can now speak openly about my pain.

Sometimes it’s connection—how I can sit with others in their grief because I truly understand it.

I didn’t choose the breaking.

But I am choosing the gold, for now.

And every time I show up for myself—every time I write, cry, or reflect instead of going numb—I’m painting those cracks with something resilient and real.

So no, I’m not “good as new.”

I’m better.

I’m different.

My scars are beautiful.

I am Kintsugi.

🌀 Reader Reflection

If you’re reading this and feel like you’re in pieces—know this: you don’t have to put yourself back together the same way. You can be changed and still be whole. Your cracks don’t make you less; they can become the most honest, human, and beautiful parts of you.

How have your broken places been filled with gold?

I’d love to hear what healing has looked like for you.

Here are a few questions to reflect on:

  1. What are the “cracks” in your life that you’ve learned to live with—or even grow from?
  2. If you were made of Kintsugi, what would your gold be?
What strength or lesson has filled your broken places?
  3. Has your pain shaped you into someone more compassionate or wise? How?
  4. What part of your story do you now see as beautiful, even if it hurt at the time?
  5. What does healing look like for you today—not perfect, but real?

15 Tips to Stay Positive in Negative Situations

15 Tips to Stay Positive in Negative Situations

By Donald Latumahina, September 10, 2007 There are times when we must go through negative situations. Maybe people say something negative about us, or they show rejection or even resentment against us. In such situations, it may be difficult to stay positive. We may be inclined to react negatively to them. That won't do us any good though; doing so will just make the situation worse. People may behave even more negatively to us. Our day would be filled with anger and disappointment. At the end, nobody wins. Though it's not easy, it's important to stay positive in negative situations. Beat the negative situations by staying positive. Here are 15 tips on how to do it; pick the ones that work for you:1. Never respond when you are not calm. If you are not sure that you are calm, don't respond. Take time to calm yourself down first. 2. Take a deep breath as a first step to calm yourself down. 3. Speak in gentle tone to reduce the tension of the situation. 4. Realize that you can find opportunities in negative situations. Albert Einstein said: "In the middle of every difficulty lies opportunity." 5. Look at the content of what people say to you for something positive that you can act upon to improve yourself. Don't just reject the whole messages. 6. For the rest of the messages which is negative, simply ignore it. 7. Maintain positive view of the people. Maybe you don't like their messages or behavior, but that doesn't mean that you can hate them personally. 8. Realize that having negative feelings will just hurt you, not them. So there is no reason for you to have any negative feeling. 9. If you make mistakes, be open to admit it. 10. If you make mistakes, remember this quote by George Bernard Shaw: "A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable, but more useful than a life spent doing nothing." 11. If you can, listen to motivational audio program to feed positive thoughts into your mind. 12. Talk to a positive friend who can encourage you. 13. Remember your favorite quotes to give you inspiration and motivation. 14. Look at the negative situations as your training sessions for real life. The higher you climb in life, the worse the negative situations would be, so you'd better be prepared for them. 15. Realize that you can't please everyone. In fact, nobody can. Sometimes you need to just let some people go. Realizing this will relieve you from a lot of unnecessary burden so that you can focus on the people that you can positively interact with.

Isaiah 40:31

Isaiah 40:31

"But they that wait upon the LORD
shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as EAGLES
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint"

My friend Dayna IMed me the other day with this bible verse. If you know me you know that I am always looking for Bible Verses, Quotes, and lyrics that help define who I am or what I am going through.

In my beliefs, I think that my relationship with God is personal and not to be judged or defined however. I do believe that there are people out there that interpert the bible however they see fit.

To me this verse says I shall wait and trust in my faith and I will be filled with renewed strength. That I will soar with eagles. I will run and not be tired and I can walk with paitence and not be weak.

What does this bible verse say to you?

Going through this deployment there are days where I have to FIGHT to get through the day. To wake up in the mornings not seeing my husband on the pillow next to me as the sun touches the clouds in the sky. I have to remember as I wake that I have something more precious and thats the beauty and grace of my little girl. She is a gift (as is my husband). Just a reminder why I am here and what I am doing. Thats when she doesn't wake me up with her plea's for attention lol.

Testimony?

I am not sure what a testimony is... I am not a reglious Holy Roller I guess. I don't pressure people about believing how I believe because I have met very few that do. I don't often talk about my relationship with God maybe because its personal and its private. I think maybe everyone has a different relationship with God. Its a very emotional thing. Thats like someone asking why you love your children or your husband. Could you really explain? I think your faith is the same way.
Anyways in a Mommy Support group the topic of religion got started. I tend to not get started in these but I felt I was called to speak up and this is what I wrote about WHY I believe what I believe. Why I have faith...
My first husband would damn God and Jesus. Everything was God's Fault, Jesus's fault, or MY fault. His Epilepsy, his pain, whatever. He told Mackenzie at 6 months old he was born and he would be raised to Kill Jesus Christ. That literally scared me so bad! I was called a traitor for wanting to read the bible and go to church.
Donnie who was raised catholic and still claims to be but also has atheist views. He would question me as other's have. How can you believe in something that has caused you so much pain? How can you believe in someone that has taken your children from you? How can you believe in someone who has done this? Kills precious babies. My answer?
Because I don't believe the higher being does this. I doubt I can explain to you why I believe in God or have faith blindly but isn't that what faith is? I doubt your going to have an ah ha moment from my explanation. But I have faith and I believe in God even though I too have lost the faith at points, I believe in it because its all I got! Its all that keeps me going, when I hit the rocks. I had faith it was for a reason... When your down to nothing God is up to something... I read on a church sign as I returned from one of my visitations with Mackenzie. That was an ah ha moment for me. I have to have faith that this is for a reason. I have to have faith that God is protecting Mackenzie since I am such a worthless mother I can't protect him myself. I have to have faith that I will see him again. When Skylar had to undergo the surgery in her mouth. I really struggled once again not with trust or faith but just how to give all my concerns to god. I turned to a few people and learned how. Now I am facing the battle again with Rick. I refuse to live my life any other way. Without my faith I have no strength. I love blindly. I believe blindly. I live blindly. If nothing I was taught truly exists and we just all become dust then so be it. At least my faith got me through another beautiful day.

Yes I am Okay!

Yes I am Okay, Yes I am fine.
No I am not okay with you being so far away from me.
No I am not okay with you missing our first Christmas together.
No I am not okay with you missing our first Anniversary us being apart.
Yes I am Okay, Yes I am FINE!
No I am not okay, looking at pictures of you holding me,
Tears flowing. Chills over come me without your presence.
No I am not okay with the fact that soon I know your touch will become a memory.
Yes I am Okay, Yes I am FINE!
No I am not okay with the fact that your smell will no longer exist.
No I am not okay that 400 days of our lives will pass before we can say its over.
No I am not okay that I have all these worries and questions.
Yes I am Okay, Yes I am FINE!
But maybe I will never be the same...

"Those Who Touch Our Lives"

"Those Who Touch Our Lives"Every special person who touches our life leaves their own unique mark On our heart; a mark which can never be chiseled away even if the years Eventually pull us apart. We can take on their expressions and such the more we share of ourselves Together. It's those little things about another person that can remain A part in us forever.People who we have met throughout our life become a part of the person Who we are today. We learn and we grow from the relationships each one Touching us, in it's own special way. We laugh about spending too much Time together when we think we have become like each other. But it just Shows how much we've been touched by the relationship we have found with Another. Those special people who can touch our lives are like precious jewels Amongst life's treasure. They shine on us and leave a lasting Impression, a unique mark on our heart, a gift without measures.Author Unknown

Quote

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

"I'm thankful for my health, my childhood, and spell check.
I'm thankful for a new hot-water tank and how we no longer have to coordinate our dishwashing with our bathing.
I'm thankful for the wide range of flavors potato chips come in - mesquite barbecue in particular.
For platform shoes.
For coincidences.
I'm thankful for all the people who ever left, in those dishes by the cashier, a penny I later used.
That I don't know everything that people say behind my back.
I'm thankful I was born after the advent of indoor plumbing, and after the popularity of corsets.
I'm thankful for insect repellent, nonstick pans, and Velcro.
I'm thankful that people in real life don't spontaneously break into song like they do in musicals,
and that some weeds look like flowers,
and that at the end of a really bad day there is sleep.
I'm thankful for maybe."
